We stayed at Ramada by Wyndham Essen for one of the most important events of our lives — our wedding — and while much of our experience was positive and memorable, there was also one unfortunate incident that left a lasting impression. Because it was such a meaningful occasion, we feel it’s only fair to share both the highlights and the challenges we faced during our stay. We had booked three rooms for ourselves and close family. We wanted everything to go smoothly so we could relax, get ready, and celebrate together. The hotel itself has a lot going for it: it’s modern, clean, and well located, with easy access to the center of Essen, shops, and transportation. From a practical standpoint, it was a solid choice — and visually, it offered a great backdrop for photos. Our rooms were clean, spacious, and well-furnished. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom modern, and there was enough natural light for makeup, photography, and getting dressed. My wife and I took some of our pre-wedding photos inside the room and around the hotel — and the images came out beautiful. The hotel has a contemporary, neutral style that worked well with the elegance of the day. Breakfast was also a highlight. The buffet had a nice range of options: eggs, fresh bread, fruits, cheeses, meats, and more. Coffee and juices were readily available, and the breakfast room had a calm, cozy atmosphere. The staff at breakfast were attentive and polite, and everything was regularly restocked and fresh. However, our arrival at the hotel was marked by an experience that, unfortunately, cast a shadow over the weekend. When we arrived at the front desk to check in, we were met with a very rude and unwelcoming staff member. Her tone was cold from the beginning, and she didn’t offer a smile, greeting, or any warmth whatsoever — which you’d typically expect, especially when guests are checking in for a wedding. We asked some basic questions about the rooms and check-in times, as one of the rooms was requested for early access so we could start getting ready. Rather than helping or offering any flexibility, she acted visibly annoyed, gave very short answers, and even rolled her eyes at one point. It wasn’t just unprofessional — it was disrespectful. We had been looking forward to this weekend for months, and that interaction was the last thing we expected to deal with. Even more disappointing was the fact that she was later seen acting politely and warmly with other guests, which made us feel like we were being singled out. Whether it was due to stress, bias, or simply poor attitude, it had a real impact on our mood — especially for my wife, who deserved to be treated kindly on her special day. Fortunately, other staff we interacted with later during our stay were far more professional and pleasant. This made it clear that our issue was with one specific employee and not a reflection of the entire hotel team. When we mentioned the situation at checkout, the response was apologetic, and we were offered a drink voucher for the inconvenience — which we appreciated. Despite that incident, we made the most of our stay. The hotel facilities were great, and the atmosphere in our rooms helped us relax and focus on the celebration. Our family members also had a good experience with their rooms, and the photos we captured at the hotel will always be part of our story. In summary, Ramada by Wyndham Essen has a lot to offer: clean rooms, good food, and a great location. But guest service is everything — especially during significant life moments — and unfortunately, that part was lacking at a key time. I hope hotel management sees this feedback as a call to ensure consistent training and hospitality standards across the board. Would I stay again? Maybe — but next time, I’d definitely request to avoid the front desk staff member who made what should have been a joyful check-in feel uncomfortable.
